MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To lead and support the licence to operate and market for concrete in the UK. Thereby maintaining and/or growing market share, delivering Member value and responding to demand-side drivers. 

 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Provide strategic direction as to how the concrete sector can respond to demand-side drivers, to ensure the competitiveness of concrete in the built environment.
  • Be a visible leader of concrete in the MPA, in sector groups such as the Construction Leadership Council, Construction Products Association, professional institutions and similar built environment sector initiatives.
  • Leading and directing the teams supporting concrete products groups, including:  Ready-Mixed Concrete; Precast Concrete; Masonry; and Mortar.
  • Leading and directing the teams supporting UK Concrete, particularly promoting sustainable construction and the credentials of the sector.
  • Leading and directing the teams supporting The Concrete Centre, including: promoting architectural and building performance; providing guidance on technical and structural design and delivering activity to enable the specification of sustainable concrete. 
  • Leading and directing campaigns to promote concrete and delivering member and stakeholder engagement.
  • Creating and managing budgets that support the delivery of planned activity within scope.
  • Playing an active role within the MPA executive team to support delivery of the MPA’s strategy and aims. 
  • Provide support to MPA Scotland and MPA NI in accordance with SLAs.
 
ROLE DIMENSIONS
  • The scope of this role is assigned/agreed via annual objectives set by the Executive Management Committee and the Council.
  • UK Concrete, The Concrete Centre and the Concrete Product Groups are part of the Mineral Products Association, the trade association for the aggregate, asphalt, cement, concrete, industrial sands, lime and mortar. MPA represents around 400 members in the UK who supply over £9bn worth of materials to the UK construction sector. 
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THE ROLE
  • Sufficient credibility and gravitas in the sector to act as the ‘face’ of concrete for the MPA with external stakeholders.
  • A good general manager and strong leader capable of managing  and coordinating a highly skilled multidisciplinary team.
  • Capable of operating horizontally across the MPA and its members – understanding its aims and how concrete fits into them and drawing in wider expertise/working in collaboration to generate ‘advocacy’ for concrete and leading the delivery thereof.
  • Capable of ‘owning’ the development and maintenance of the strategic plan for concrete in the MPA.
  • Builds and maintains strong networks.
  • Strong advocacy and Influencing skills.
  • A good communicator both in terms of producing written material and face to face/presentation.
  • Understands/has experience of operating in the markets for concrete, the role concrete plays in construction and the challenges it faces  in maintaining market share.
