Demand for mineral products in 2017Q3 shows mixed trends in construction activity

Demand for construction mineral products was lower in 2017Q3 compared to both the previous quarter and 2016Q3 across all materials, except for mortar. Demand for mortar increased by 1.6% in 2017Q3 compared to the previous quarter, but sales volumes were down by 1.1% for aggregates, 1.8% for ready-mixed concrete (RMC) and 2.9% for asphalt. This is the second consecutive quarter of decline for both aggregates and RMC, and the third for asphalt.

MPA Celebrates Industry Restoration and Biodiversity Achievements at Quarries & Nature 2017

Mineral Products Association (MPA) members are planning to increase the area of priority habitats on restored sites from 6,000 hectares currently to around 9,000 hectares in coming years, and increase the length of hedgerows planted from 79 km to 237 km. The area of priority habitat would be equivalent to the size of Cardiff, and hedgerow would stretch from London to Cardiff.

Launched at the Mineral Product Association (MPA)'s Quarries & Nature 2017 event in London on 19th October, Quarrywatch will involve focused nature surveys at designated locations in order tobuild a much bigger picture of the species that are colonising restored quarries andother nature sites. The Wildlife Trusts are very positive about the initiative, with unmatched opportunities to steer surveys and host surveys at quarries that they manage as nature reserves.

MPA Welcomes the Mayor of London's Plans to Further Improve Vulnerable Road User Safety

MPA Chief Executive, Nigel Jackson, has welcomed the latest plans of the Mayor of London to help ensure that collisions between industry lorries and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists are reduced. The plans set out a timetable for the increasing use of HGVs with better driver vision and will also allow HGVs fitted with appropriate safety systems to continue to operate in London.
