Quarries have been described as the “finest outdoor classrooms” because of the rich opportunities they offer for out-of-the-classroom learning. The industry is experienced in hosting school visits for a variety of age groups.
Children are usually fascinated to discover where the materials for their schools and homes come from, and older pupils have the opportunity for geography fieldwork. With 1,300 quarries across the UK, there is usually one no more than 20 miles from every school. Quarrying companies are also very keen to secure your support in delivering the industry’s vital safety message to young people.
General Teaching resources are avaialble from our dynamic new Virtual Quarry. You will find 20 educational units across key stages 1 – 4 covering science, geography, education for sustainable development and citizenship. All have been written by teachers. You can adapt the standard QCA schemes of work while still meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum. We have also produced a whirlwind tour document specifically for teachers.
